An Integrated Training Curriculum: 'The Synthesis Way'

Building on the success of our highly acclaimed Synthesis Immersion Apprenticeship Retreats over the past three years in both the Netherlands and Costa Rica , we are inviting students and graduates of the Psychedelic Practitioner Core Training to join us as Active Witnesses for a 8-day heart-opening journey of learning and growth.

Being an Active Witness at a Synthesis retreat allows you to participate in the retreat with a unique role. You will observe and support the process, gaining deeper insights and practical experience that will enrich your understanding and skills as a psychedelic practitioner.

You will explore a variety of topics in psychedelic practice, including facilitation fundamentals, dosing and consent, touch preference conversations, integration techniques, flight instructions, and group-sharing circles.

Following each ceremony, the retreat team will hold a debrief and a facilitator Q&A session. The training provides opportunities to witness, experience, and hold space for your peers and retreat participants. At the retreat's conclusion, both peers and facilitators will participate in a collective feedback and review process.

"This was one of the most profound experiences of my life, and I tend to be a seeker of experiences. I've had a lot of very powerful group experiences, but I was blown away by this one. I didn't expect it to be as powerful. It was a wonderful way to cap the training. Now, in my reflection, I can't imagine going out and doing this work without having completed this part of the training."

What is an Active Witness?

As an Active Witness, you will practice holding space during ceremony and assist with retreat and ceremony setup, including supporting the mushroom (or truffle) tea ceremony and other activities as suggested by the retreat facilitation team. You will energetically tune into the ceremony container, learning to align your presence and behavior with the unfolding events while maintaining awareness of your own presence, nervous system, and attunement.

What to Expect as an Active Witness

Observe and support the retreat and ceremony processes, and enrich your understanding and skills as a psychedelic practitioner.
  • Three (3) Psychedelic Ceremonies:
Participate in three ceremonies featuring psilocybin-containing mushrooms. During one of the first two ceremonies, you will support your peers on their psychedelic journeys as an Active Witness under the supervision of a facilitator. In another ceremony, you will have your own journey, and finally, you and your fellow Active Witness peers will journey together in the third ceremony.
  • Practical Experience:
The Immersion Apprenticeship Retreat offers a comprehensive integration of all facets of this work. Through this immersive approach, you will align and strengthen your professional practice, gaining an embodied understanding of the journey. You will internalize the importance of a non-directive approach, staying grounded in your body, and upholding ethical practices as a facilitator. This experience provides you with a sense of spaciousness, allowing you to explore and support the development of an authentic, personalized, and multi-faceted approach to your work while learning to uphold the highest ethical and safety standards.
  • Deepen Your Personal Practice:
Further develop your personal practice and find inspiration to continue and expand your spiritual journey. This program offers self-practice time for you to delve into what you already know and love, as well as to explore new practices introduced by the team.
  • Experience Communitas:
You will form deep connections that fuel your experience of communitas, described as the “intense togetherness and shared humanity that temporarily transcends social structures.” Engage in meaningful conversations, share insights, and form relationships that extend beyond the confines of the program.
  • Connect with Wisdom Practices:
Experience a variety of facilitation styles, from modern and therapeutic to Shamanic, inspired by the wisdom our team has gained from learning under indigenous plant medicine keepers. These multi-faceted styles will open your mind to new perspectives and approaches in your personal practice.

Apply what you've learned in the Core Training, fine-tune your skills, and enhance your space-holding abilities.

By Observing and Actively Witnessing, You Will:

  • Improve your ability to offer timely and appropriate support during psychedelic sessions and ceremonies, knowing when to intervene and when to allow the process to unfold naturally.
  • Build confidence in facilitating group settings, drawing from the Synthesis retreat team's expertise in creating a supportive group environment and incorporating ceremonial aesthetics.
  • Appreciate the value of a somatically informed, non-directive approach, where facilitators refrain from interpreting or advising, creating a strong container for participants to navigate their own experiences without interpretation or advice.
  • Strive to match the level of care observed in the Synthesis facilitation model and set a high standard in your professional practice.
  • Embrace the importance of self-regulating emotions and understanding the "waves" of participants' experiences during ceremonies, maintaining sensitivity to their needs without interference.
  • Explore the beauty and significance of ceremonial aspects, enhancing the sacredness and intentionality of the facilitation process, including learning simple ceremony songs to empower participants.

"Watching Costanza and the entire team work together was definitely a learning curve for me. I have immense respect for the way they handle everything with grace. I learned many things there [...] We shared many beautiful, memorable moments together. Honestly, it's something I will never forget. Everything was welcomed and discussed, which truly shows how proficient the retreat team is at their jobs."

"There wasn’t an expectation that we’d be perfect, yet there was a high standard, demonstrated by how the team responded when we brought up questions. I think the genuine care for us permeated my experience both as an observer and as a witness to my colleagues who were learning alongside me. A sense of safety was always present, along with mutual engagement in our collaborative efforts. It all worked out really well because each person brought their unique gifts. Thus, there was a culture of kindness toward one another, and our gifts were truly appreciated. I could see this among the retreat leaders."
