With Access to Legal Psychedelic Therapy
Rapidly Expanding the Need to Prioritize Safety
and Reduce Risk is Imperative
Psychedelics are on the precipice of mainstream access.
After decades of stigma, misunderstanding, prohibition, and limits on scientific progress, modern research has begun re-exploring psychedelics’ therapeutic potential for a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression, addiction, PTSD, eating disorders, grief, and end-of-life issues.
While this research is still emerging, a variety of studies have demonstrated that psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and psychedelic-assisted retreat models can yield positive outcomes. One or two psychedelic experiences, embedded within a relatively short psychotherapeutic trajectory or undertaken in community, might result in unparalleled levels of symptom reduction.
As these powerful substances become widely available to an increasing number of people, we are approaching a historically unprecedented and crucial juncture, potent with possibility yet fragile in its infancy: With access comes the need for accountability, and as the pace of mainstream access accelerates, the imperative has never been greater to align safety, equity, ethics, and best practices to ensure we responsibly realize the potential of psychedelics without mistaking them for a panacea, rushing services with existing gaps in competency, or proceeding with a lack of reverence for the complex depths of our unconscious.
Emphasizing the importance of having proficient practitioners prepared to meet the moment is a critical component to responsibly mitigating the risks associated with psychedelic-supported care. Yet, approaches to educating ethical, embodied, experienced practitioners vary widely, regulatory requirements are currently scarce and scattered, and best practices are only just beginning to be established. With such a vast range of potential experiences that can occur when psychedelics are present, determining what qualifies someone to support others through a psychedelic journey remains an ongoing conversation.
The Necessity to Define — and Continually
Redefine — the Personal and Professional Skills
a Psychedelic Practitioner Must Possess
to Prioritize Safety is Immense
Different approaches to psychedelic care beget different kinds of training, but practitioners must also understand legal requirements and embody certain ethical standards beyond the core competencies.
As a result, there is a growing urgency for therapists and practitioners trained in best practices from an interdisciplinary perspective to mitigate risk, reduce harm, and ensure positive short-term and long-term participant outcomes.
That’s why the Synthesis Institute, in partnership with some of the world’s foremost scholars, practitioners, and thought leaders, has created the second edition of The Fundamentals of Psychedelics — Rightful Responsibility: The Role of Ethical, Embodied, Educated Practitioners as Access Expands to give both aspiring and established psychedelic practitioners an essential foundation for working with psychedelics within and outside of therapeutic models.

Meg

Registered Nurse / Postdoc Researcher
"This conference was a deeply intentional immersive experience. More than strictly providing knowledge (which there was plenty of!) I felt a sense that I was on a journey with the speakers and that we were all important aspects of the journey. I learned so much about psychedelic-assisted therapy, saw the potential for a cultural shift toward Wholeness, and reconnected with my purpose."
Nathan

Minimalist, Climate Coach and Psychonaut
"This conference was the highlight of the year for me and confirmation that I want to start as a professional in this field of work. It was a beautiful way to learn about the foundation of psychedelic practices."
Kris S.

Embodied Integration Coach
“Synthesis is the complete package. An incredible team of highly-qualified, intelligent, forward thinkers. The conference unveiled new ideas, solidified others and introduced me to an interesting and exciting community. I am hooked on Synthesis and look forward to this modern school of learning!”
Marcus Williams

Coach
"Synthesis has had a profound impact on the way I approach my coaching work. This conference is a great way to learn, find allies and participate in a transformational movement."
Deborah Miller

Licensed Psychotherapist and Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner
“It would be hard to imagine a psychedelic training program of higher quality or greater breadth and depth than that of The Synthesis Institute. Where else would you find sitting at the same table in consultation a Zen master, a shaman, a sociologist/philosopher, a psychiatrist, an economist, an academic researcher, clinical psychologists, and extremely experienced laypeople who have been guiding psychedelic journeys for decades? Every single presentation was exceptionally thought-provoking and solid.”
Mark J.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker
"This was an extremely informative, well-run, well-organized online offering on the emerging field of psychedelic care."

As we gather for a virtual professional conference on the leading edge of psychedelic care as informed by clinical research, wisdom traditions, and the Synthesis Institute’s own experience guiding over 1,000 individuals through psychedelic-supported retreat programs since 2018.
Synthesis Institute’s Fundamentals of Psychedelics — Second Edition invites you to experience powerful practices to support your personal growth, explore the critical core competencies required to offer psychedelic care, learn the essentials of working safely and ethically with psychedelics within and outside of therapeutic models, and discover a meaningful professional path that will allow you to begin supporting others through psychedelic-supported care.
IN THIS LIVE, ONLINE CONFERENCE, YOU WILL:
- Explore the current challenges arising in the contemporary psychedelic ecosystem and how we can begin to meet these through the training of future psychedelic facilitators
- Identify the accountability and safety gaps now visible as the pace of mainstream access to psychedelics accelerates and the crucial role best practices and protocols must play within both established and emerging frameworks for safety, belonging, and personal growth
- Discover the critical role various personal self-care and integration practices play in the lives of skilled psychedelic practitioners and immerse yourself in some of these during professionally facilitated group sessions that open and close each day of the conference
- Reflect on the universal experience of gaps between the idealized and realized self and how it can help us cultivate ethical structures informed by compassion — and self-compassion
- Explore some of the potential legal, ethical, and health risks associated with psychedelics and psychedelic care and the function of assessing readiness as a foundational safety practice and necessary first step of any psychedelic journey
- Recognize the essential need to hold space for others during psychedelic experiences and how best practices from palliative and hospice care can connect, inform, and relate to psychedelic care
- Gain an appreciation for the imperative to set healthy expectations and boundaries when supporting clients preparing for and integrating psychedelic experiences and how the refinement of a shared language around preparation, care, and integration can help
- Realize the importance of attuning to the different ways people make meaning, and deepen your understanding of ritual and ceremony as a scaffolding for meaning-making
- Connect with a growing international community of professionals and practitioners — including top scholars and thought leaders — dedicated to advancing the field of contemporary, legal psychedelic care
Whether you want to enhance your existing skills through an interdisciplinary lens, seek to support your clients in their journey with psychedelics, or aspire to specialize in psychedelic care, The Fundamentals of Psychedelics — Second Edition provides those at all levels of psychedelic education and experience with an overview of the foundational knowledge and practices required to be an ethical, embodied, educated psychedelic practitioner.

Grazyna Amber

Psychotherapist
"If you care about inner work and healing and want to be at the forefront of what is hopeful, genuinely effective and kind, this may well be your tribe. Wise, experienced, inclusive and holistic theory, practice, ethics and self / relational development . I have learned so much and am so excited and optimistic after a life’s career in mental health ‘and the world is getting worse’. And people are getting more distressed! Could this be a turning point?"
Darrah Whitman Jones

Mental Health Clinician/Therapist, Associate Clinical Social Worker
"My experience was that this conference is an incredible and informative way to connect with other passionate professionals and learn a great deal of information about different approaches to ethical and effective uses of psychedelics for the betterment of individual wellbeing, community care, and global healing. I completed this conference with increased confidence in my understanding of psychedelics in healing professions, helpful connections with other brilliant minds doing this work, and a deeper connection to myself and the importance of my own inner work as it relates to my personal and professional self. The quality of the presenters and their materials was highly valuable, and the conference was organized incredibly well. I was so pleased with my experience. It felt worth the investment in every way."
